Methaemoglobin results from the oxidation of ferrous to ferric iron in the centre of the haem moeity of haemoglobin. The production of dose-dependent methaemoglobinaemia by 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial drugs appears to be associated with, but is not directly linked to therapeutic efficacy against latent vivax and ovale malarias. Iatrogenic methaemoglobinaemia may be a useful pharmacodynamic measure in 8-aminoquinoline drug and dose optimization.

This study was carried out to optimize formulation for Heracleum Lasiopetalum (golpar) extract nanoencapsulation by response surface methodology (RSM). The primary emulsion was fabricated by (5-10 %) golpar extract (GE), (40-35 %) emulsifier span 80 (EM), and (50-60 %) sunflower oil (SO). The coating materials of nanoencapsulation were the composition of Lepidium sativum seed gum (LSG) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) at different ratios (1:0, 1:1, and 0:1). The yield of nanoencapsulation of golpar extract, particle size, and zeta potential was investigated as responses of RSM. The optimal formulation for nanoencapsulation of golpar extract were SO: 50.46%, GE 9.52%, and EM: 36.30% in LSG, SO: 57.07%, GE: 7.12%, and EM: 30.85% in LSG:WPC, and SO: 54.98%, GE: 9.05%, and EM: 39.87% in WPC coating. In conclusion, the nanoencapsulation of golpar extract prepared with the optimized formulation by RSM ensures the gradual release and sedimentation during storage with nanometric size and high yield of encapsulation. The nanocapsules of golpar extract can be used as a natural antioxidant in food systems.

A 34-year-old female presented with several weeks of fever, fatigue, weight loss, abdominal pain and hemoptysis. PE revealed moderate pallor, RUQ pain, mild dyspnea, conjunctival injection and hepatomegaly. The CBC showed anemia, mild leukocytosis, hypoalbuminemia, hypertransaminasemia, presence of nucleated red blood cells. Microsporidium was found in BMA.

Current research on wax-based oleogels indicates wax esters to be the key component in many natural waxes. This necessitates understanding the properties of pure wax esters to unravel the gelling mechanism in wax-based oleogels. Therefore, wax esters with different carbon numbers and symmetries were studied and characterized regarding their thermal (DSC) and viscoelastic (oscillatory rheology) behavior. Pure wax esters and binary mixtures of wax esters were studied as such and in oleogels formed in combination with medium chained triglyceride oil at WE-inclusion levels of 10 % (w/w). Interpretation of the observations was based on detailed analysis of pre-existing data on crystallographic (SAXS) and thermal properties. It is found that all observations concerning single pure WE’s obey a systematic framework linking molecular make up, crystal structure and behavior. The study on the gelling of four different binary mixtures of wax esters revealed that substantial chain length differences do have the expected consequence of separate crystallization. Mixtures of wax esters with only limited chain length difference reconfirmed earlier speculations on mixing and crystal structure. Applying mixtures of wax esters only differing in their position of the ester bond indicated ideal mixing behavior in the solid phase of the gels. Actually, the data revealed that despite these expected observations in both systems, additional thermal events occur at specific mixing ratios. Their supposed relation to compound formation certainly needs further confirmation. Rheological analysis confirmed that sequential crystallization results in highest firmness values for the systems studied.

Taxon-specific characteristics and extrinsic climatic and geological forces may both shape population differentiation and speciation. In geographically and taxonomically focused investigations, differentiation may occur synchronously as species respond to the same external conditions. Conversely, when evolution is investigated in taxa with largely varying traits, population differentiation and speciation is complex and shaped by interactions of Earth’s template and species-specific traits. As such, it is important to characterize evolutionary histories broadly across the tree of life, especially in geographic regions that are exceptionally diverse and under pressures from human activities such as in biodiversity hotspots. Here, using whole-genome sequencing data, we characterize genomic variation in populations of six Ethiopian Highlands forest bird species separated by a lowland biogeographic barrier, the Great Rift Valley (GRV). In all six species, populations on either side of the GRV exhibited significant but varying levels of genetic differentiation. Species’ dispersal ability was negatively correlated with levels of population differentiation. Isolation with migration models indicated varied patterns of population differentiation and connectivity among populations of the focal species. We found that demographic histories—estimated for each individual—varied by both species and population but were consistent between individuals of the same species and sampling region. We found that genomic diversity varied by half an order of magnitude across species, and that this variation could largely be explained by the harmonic mean of effective population size over the past 200,000 years. Overall, we found that even in highly dispersive species like birds, the GRV acts as a substantial biogeographic barrier.

We report a case of cutaneous lymphangioma secondary to breast cancer radiotherapy after mastectomy.

Aim: We have studied population genetic change through time in the Northern dragonhead, Dracocephalum ruyschiana (Lamiaceae); a plant species that has experienced a drastic population decline and habitat loss in Europe. We aimed at adding a historic level to the monitoring of dragonhead by testing a microfluidic SNP array approach on herbarium specimens up to 200 years old and comparing the genomic results with that of modern populations in Norway. We also aimed to gain a more holistic species knowledge to guide monitoring efforts by combining herbarium genomics with ecological niche modelling (ENM). Location: Europe (mainly Norway) Methods: We have applied a microfluidic array consisting of 96 SNP markers on 130 herbarium specimens collected from 1820 to 2008. Obtained genotype data were compared with SNP data from modern samples using various population genetic analyses. We used sample metadata and observational records to model the species’ environmental niche. Results: The SNP array successfully genotyped all included herbarium specimens but was less capable of capturing diversity outside of Norway, which was genetically highly divergent from the Norwegian dragonheads. The historic-modern comparison revealed similar genetic structure in space and limited change through time in Norway. The ENM suggests that dragonhead has not fully achieved its potential distribution in Norway, which is anchored in warmer and drier regions, including areas where it does not occur today. Main conclusions: With the appropriate design procedures, the SNP array technology is promising for genotyping old herbarium specimens; an invaluable source of information from the past. We found no signs of the severe reduction in population size in our temporal genomic data of Norwegian dragonhead. Regardless, the regional populations in Norway are genetically divergent, both from each other and more so from populations outside of Norway, rendering continued protection of all existing populations of the species relevant.

Massive myocardial calcification is a very rare finding. Accurate identification and characterization may help the clinicians to determine the etiology and clinical significance. In this case, the diagnostic pathway excluded previous myocardial infarction, myocarditis and calcium-phosphate disorders. A possible dystrophic etiology was considered. There are no standardized imaging features available to classify specific subtypes of intramyocardial calcifications. The relative merits of cardiac computed tomography and magnetic resonance in providing complimentary diagnostic information for calcific myocardial lesions is shown. Knowledge of the potential etiology and their imaging patterns are important to provide a concise and accurate differential diagnosis.

Little is known on how disasters interact in their impacts on patient care. We experienced a breast cancer patient whose initial presentation was delayed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Typhoon Hagibis. Increasing awareness is needed on the combined impacts of disasters on breast cancer management.

Hypophysitis is a rare inflammatory condition that may present both clinically and radiologically as a neoplastic lesion. Xanthogranulomas are rare intracranial lesions with controversial etiology. Here, we report a clinical case of histologically confirmed xanthogranuloma in a young female with type I diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism.
