Measurement of ocean floor seismic activity is crucial for earthquake and other geophysical studies. Due to the movement of oceanic and continental plates, the Andaman subduction zone is heavily prone to dynamic earth activities. In this communication, I report on the use of optical fibers as sensors and ultrastable laser interferometry as detectors for monitoring such seismic activities. I will present a proposal for the use of submarine optical fiber cables, lying between mainland India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in the detection of earthquakes in the Andaman Subduction zone.

In this paper, a proof-of-concept experiment for IEEE1588 PTP-based Indian standard time dissemination through a dark telecom optical fiber in the central Delhi region has been reported. This is the first such demonstration of IST through terrestrial optical fibers and should provide redundancy to popular satellite based time distribution in India.
