Abstract

• Poor estimates of the sinking speed of marine aggregates stem primarily high variance in aggregate excess density. • Self-similarity of aggregation facilitates efficiently modelling of aggregate size and excess density, and hence sinking speed. • This provides a mechanistic description of how planktonic communities impact the size and density-resolved export flux of organic matter.
