I graduated at the University of Paris in 1961 and received a State Doctorate in Physical Sciences (chemistry) at the University of Rouen in 1969 after a thesis work on Synthetic Optically Active Polymers. I Joined the French CNRS in 1965. I started as junior scientist. In 1971, I was promoted senior scientist. In 1981, I joined the National Institute for Applied Sciences at Rouen to create and lead the Laboratory of Macromolecular Substances. In 1984, I became CNRS Research Director. In 1991, I moved the Rouen group to the University of Montpellier to create a laboratory specialized on researches at the interfaces between chemistry, degradable polymeric biomaterials, biology, health and environment. I retired from this institution on 2007. From 2007 until 2022, I was emeritus Research Director at CNRS. I authored or co-authored more than 400 major articles and book chapters, and 30 patents. In 2002, I co-founded MedinCell and Arterial Remodelling Technologies Companies. For about 20 years, I served as Editor-in-Chief for Europe of the Journal of Biomaterials Science: Polymer Edition and was member of the editorial board of several scientific journals. Presently, I am member of the IUPAC Sub-Committee for Polymer Terminology. I was awarded a CNRS Silver Medal in 1989, the “Jungfleish” Grand Prix of the French Academy of Sciences in 2001, the European Grand Prix of Innovation for the Environment in 2005 and the Grand Prix Georges Winter of the European Society for Biomaterials
