As the important coal bases in northwestern China, the hydrological and ecological environment of Ordos, northern Shaanxi (Shanbei) and Shanxi Province has attracted more and more attention. Terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) and precipitation, as important hydrological elements, play an important role in the distribution and growth of vegetation. In this paper, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation data, and the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) were used to analyze the spatial-temporal changes and coupling relationships of TWSA, precipitation and ecological environment from 2002 to 2020. The numerical results showed the TWSA in the study area has a decreasing trend and the rates are -6.19mm/a, -7.67mm/a and -16.92mm/a for Ordos, Shanbei and Shanxi Province, respectively. On the contrary, the precipitation appeared an increasing trend and the rates are 0.35mm/a, 0.63mm/a and 0.18mm/a for these three sub-regions. It is found that the precipitation is not the main factor causing the variation of TWSA, but the coal mining activities and artificial irrigation activities, which is especially clear in the Taihang Mountains in eastern of Shanxi Province. The ecological environment has been improving, and TWSA and precipitation are the important hydrological factors causing this change. Precipitation is the main reason for improving the ecological environment in three sub-regions on a seasonal scale, especially in summer. The research results are helpful to understand the impact of hydrological changes on the ecological environment, which play an important role in environmental governance in coal mining areas.

The soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamic was usually considered as a minor change based on a static process in the sealed soil under decades of impervious surface (IS). However, no systematic studies concerning the soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SON) dynamic were conducted under IS in contrast with urban vegetation (i.e., forest, grass). Here we utilized fractional distillation of soils as well as stable isotopic analysis to examine soil C&N cycles after 20 and 30 years of vegetation planting and IS construction in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Pearl River Delta, China. Soil samples including bare soil (CK) and four land use treatments were split into different chemical fractions. Then we analyzed the C&N content, C/N ratio, δ13C, δ15N, C&N recalcitrant indices (RIC, RIN), and the mean residence time (MRT). We found that the soil C&N increased first (i.e., 20 years) because of enhanced C&N stocks in both labile (LP) and recalcitrant pool (RP), and then stabilized or decreased (i.e., 30 years) with the IS ages in both cities. IS had a lower SOC decomposition rate and thus resulted in the five to ten times longer MRT (about 259–465 years) than that in vegetated soils (about 39–55 years). Moreover, the SOC&SON always showed a decoupling relation in labile pools (i.e., LC and LN) in forests in both cities. The study showed the IS remarkably altered the soil C&N dynamics, showing a great difference in SOC&SON fractions composition and turnover compared with vegetation.

We explored the relative importance of climate oscillations and human-driven disturbances on the change of vegetation biomass in agroecosystems, and whether it is associated with land use. The study was carried out in the drylands of the Iberian Peninsula, NW Maghreb, Palestinian West Bank, Mozambique, China and NE Brazil, using satellite time-series and the corresponding climate fields, at ten-year observation periods with spatial and temporal resolutions of 1000 m (250 m in Palestine) and one year, respectively. For each region, we separated the relative weights of climate and time by fitting multiple-stepwise regressions to a vegetation index as the dependent variable, and annual aridity (Aridity) and year number (Time) as predictors. The relative strength of the resulting standard partial regression coefficients was then compared by the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test, and their combined associations with land uses were determined using chi-square tests. Some points of convergence are: 1. The relative weights of Aridity and Time depend on particular regional conditions and can be determined. 2. Such weights are associated with land use intensification, such that if vegetation increases over Time, Aridity increases its relative importance with intensification; if vegetation is degrading, Aridity is always more important than Time. 3. Aridity is an indicator of vulnerability to climate warming. Resilience can be improved by reducing land use intensification. 4. Vulnerability may worsen under constant climate if agriculture is intensified. These patterns enhance an integrated understanding of Sustainable Development Goals Indicator 15.3.1, particularly its land cover and productivity trend components.

Agricultural Policy has been a major driver of Land Use Changes in Portugal, especially the south-eastern Alentejo: the commons division in the early 20 th century, autarkic policies from the fascist regime, and subsidies for forestry, cereal, and cattle production since joining the common market. This study focuses on the Serra de Mértola, an area with poor soils historically subject to land degradation. Data from the Vale Formoso Erosion Centre (1961-present) was used to compute erosion rates under different land uses representative of the study area. Higher values were found in vertical Fallow (964kg/ha/yr), Wheat (90kg/ha/yr) and horizontal Fallow (66kg/ha/yr), with lower values associated with Spontaneous Vegetation (3kg/ha/yr), Quercus (4kg/ha/yr), and Pines (7kg/ha/yr). Analysis of trends in Landsat NDVI values allowed to discriminate between land cover change and natural oscillations in weather and vegetation growth: in dry years NDVI values decrease for winter and spring, maintaining lower values throughout the year, while natural vegetation recovery shows a slow but steady increase until it stabilizes or breaks due to human action. Breaks in NDVI values were correlated with occasional ploughing in pastureland and spontaneous vegetation as well as the different moments in the agricultural year for cereal production. Three tendencies were observed: in Cultivated areas, ploughing provides higher sediment availability in valley floors, resulting in aggradation; Pastureland shows rock fragments on slopes and lower sediment availability, leading to incision on valley floors; Spontaneous Vegetation/Abandoned Land leads to a sharp decrease of sedimentary yield, with incision until its natural growth stabilizes hillslope processes.

In this study, we examined the effects of different mass ratios of aged refuse on Tagetes patula and rhizosphere microbes. The results showed that chlorophyll content and activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase in leaf tissue increased significantly in plants cultivated in soil:aged refuse mixtures compared with ordinary soil, whereas levels of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl decreased significantly in soil:aged refuse mixtures. Microbial community analysis revealed that aged refuse is rich in a variety of rhizosphere microbes that contribute to pollutant degradation, although microbial diversity was found to be relatively low. Bacterial genera such as Ferruginibacter, Hymenobacter, unclassified_Gemmataceae, Longimicrobium, Tychonema CCAP 1459-11B, Gemmatirosa, and Rubellimicrobium tended to be enriched to a greater extent in ordinary soil compared with soil:aged refuse mixtures. Correspondingly, bacterial genera such as Emticicia, Caedibacter, Anaerosalibacter, Tumebacillus, Patulibacter, Oceanotoga, Dyadobacter, Chloroflexus, and Acidobacteria bacterium SCN 69-37, Polycyclovorans, tended to be enriched in mixtures with a higher proportion of aged refuse. Functional prediction analysis revealed that rhizosphere microbe functions changed markedly following the addition of aged refuse. These findings indicate that aged refuse may represent a source of environmental stress for plants and modifies the dominant bacterial composition of rhizosphere microbes. The combination of organic or inorganic pollutants, plant physiological stress responses, and rhizosphere microbial community composition may have potential cooperative or dynamic equilibrium relationships. With respect to identifying potential approaches to recycling aged refuse, it will be necessary to focus on selecting optimal mass ratios of aged refuse and ordinary soil to control contaminant exposure.

Using a household and plot-level survey conducted in 2016/17 in ten districts of Ethiopia, this study explores whether there is a difference in farmers’ adoption of sustainable land management (SLM) practices between their rainfed and irrigated plots. The paper also investigates the varying influence of different types of irrigation water management systems and associated irrigation technologies on the adoption of SLM practices in irrigated plots. Our findings show only a small difference in the average number of SLM practices between rainfed and irrigated plots, even though significant differences are observed between many of the practices applied individually among these plots. The econometric estimation shows that the role of the combined effect of irrigation water management system and irrigation technology on adoption of SLM practices is quite varied and very significant. The evidence highlights that farmers adopt more SLM practices in their plots with pump irrigation compared to those plots where gravity irrigation is applied. This finding implies that pump irrigation systems enhance complementarities with SLM practices. Furthermore, the results indicate that the type of irrigation water management and the technology applied could play an important role in restoring degraded lands and maintaining soil fertility, even when farmers’ adoption of irrigation were not explicitly triggered by concerns for soil health.

Abstract: Land systems in drylands have been experiencing increasing conflicts among different land functions due to ecological vulnerability and growing demands. The improvement of one function is often at the cost of other functions, which causes trade-offs of functions. Understanding land multifunctionality and its trade-offs are prerequisites to alleviate land use conflicts and achieve land sustainability. But research often cannot well address the fuzziness and uncertainty within assessments, and neglect the nonlinear feature when quantifying the trade-offs. Taking the Heihe River Basin (HRB), a typical arid ecologically vulnerable area in China, as the study area, we applied the set pair analysis (SPA) to develop a novel framework for assessing land multifunctionality at a fine scale from the production-living-ecological angle. We then utilized the constraint line fitted with segmented quantile regression to identify the trade-offs among land functions and understand the bidirectional interaction between land systems. The results showed that the overall land multifunctionality in HRB showed an upward trend during 2000-2015, and especially the production and living functions had a larger magnitude. We used the coupling coordination degree to comprehensively indicate the interaction and found that the degree was high in the south and low in the north, which was mainly controlled by ecological function. The effects of different drivers on land functions showed nonlinear characteristics, and thresholds existed for some influencing factors. Our research provides reliable and detailed information to coordinated the development of land systems, which is helpful for sustainable land use and territorial spatial planning.

This paper present results on soil contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) on soil sorptivity and hydrophobicity under different soil moistures. The micro-infiltrometer method was used in laboratory experiment to determine the soil water repellency index (R) and the water drop penetration time (WDPT) test. The increase in PHs contamination contributed to soil repellency and caused a decrease in water sorptivity. The negative effect of contamination with PHs on soil sorptivity depended on soil moisture and was marked especially clearly after exceeding the critical moisture threshold. However, contamination by PHs did not reveal significant changes when ethanol was used instead of water. The R index and the WDPT test revealed a similar trend, inversely related to the level of soil contamination with PHs. The total amount of water available to plants in non-contaminated soil was 19.04%, while contamination equal to 100 g kg -1 caused a decrease to 6.36%. Hydrophobization of water-conducting pore surfaces by petroleum hydrocarbons severely reduced infiltration and destroyed the existing hydrological system of naturally hydrophilic soil. The almost three-fold decrease in total amount of water has a fundamental influence on increasing the risk of soil drought. The soil water repellency causes a decrease in resistance to droughts and slows the alimentation process of soil water retention. The results obtained indicated that the interrelations presented between the level of PHs contamination, soil sorptivity, water repellency, and soil moisture are key to predicting the environmental effects of contamination and effective soil remediation.

The objective was to know the effect of amendments and mulch (pine woodchips) on three planted autochthonous species in two substrates six years after the beginning of the restoration. But because this kind of mulch contained pine cones, pine seedlings appeared after the first year of the restoration; new objectives were added to the initial one: to know if organic amendments influence pine growth among planted vegetation, and if there were competition among planted species, opportunistic species and pines. Essential soil parameters, plant cover and diversity and pine growth were measured and statistically processed with correlation analyses, ANOVA and Detrended Correspondence Analysis. Six years after restoration organic amendments, applied all over the plots contributed significantly to explain the differences on the tested variables. The combined effects of the two substrates and the two organic amendments effectively enhanced soil properties recovery, but they also facilitated the establishment and entry of new species in addition to planted vegetation, driving a differential plant development. The number of pines, as well as their coverage, depended on the interaction between the amendment and the substrate: a) only one amendment favoured the pines and b) the way the amendment works depended on the substrate. Planted vegetation cover and total plant cover from amended plots doubled that of control plots. Results indicate the potential suitability of organic amendments, pine chips mulch and derived opportunistic species for restoring post-mining areas.

Informed, wise land management is a challenge since long, but has gained extra importance through the need for responding to the climate change effects. The European Green Deal is one example of a concertation effort in a world where data availability, sharing options, and just-in-time exploitation are not entirely solved. The LandSupport service responds to this challenge through a combination of a Spatial Decision Support System on top of a datacube management and analytics engine. In this paper we specifically focus on this datacube engine and how it can contribute to a better decision making through an ordered multi-dimensional data man­agement paired with strictly standards-compliant inter­faces. Further, the approach described shows a remedy against the current fragmentation of services: through a location-transparent federation a single common pool of information is established, including distributed fusion allowing an unlimited mix-and-match of data regardless of their location.

Although it is well known that groundwater significantly influences plant communities, there have been few studies on how the soil and plant communities respond to groundwater level decline in a short time affected by coal mining. This paper examined the changes in groundwater depth before and after coal mining and the soil-vegetation response in a typical semi-arid grassland coal mine area of Hulunbuir Steppe, Northeastern China. The IsoSource model, based on the dual stable isotopes of δ D and δ 18O, was employed to estimate groundwater contributions to shallow soil (0-100cm) water under different groundwater depths. The results revealed that groundwater was the dominant water source (75.7±17.1%) for shallow soil water when the groundwater depth is less than 4 meters, indicating that 4m is a threshold in groundwater depth, separating groundwater-dependent, and precipitation-driven vegetation system in the study area. Secondly, a strong non-linear response between vegetation species, height, coverage, and groundwater decline was identified in the coal mine area. The vegetation properties were found to be lowest in the areas where groundwater depth increased from 1.5~4 m to 4~28 m before and after coal mining. Finally, the groundwater level decline in the mining area significantly influenced the groundwater-dependent vegetation ecosystem, with the soil CEC and organic matter reduced, and the plant community degraded, succeeding from mesophytic to xerophytic. Whereas, the soil-vegetation system in the non-groundwater-dependent area has no obvious response to the groundwater decline. These results suggest that caution should be exercised when mining in groundwater-dependent ecosystem regions.

The black soil region of northeast China is one of the most productive regions of the world. The depth of A horizon is rapidly decreasing due to excessive erosion. A strategy for erosion hazard evaluation and soil conservation planning has been proposed and tested on the region. Climate, geomorphology, DEM, soil, landuse, runoff plot and corn yield data were compiled. Soil erosion rate, A horizon thickness and corn yield under six conservation scenarios during 2020~2200 was predicted. The six scenarios include Present (continue present practices), Contour (contour tillage), Straw (straw incorporated in tillage layer), Combo 1 (contour tillage and terracing etc.), No-till (no-till farming) and Combo 2 (partially Combo 1 and partially No-till). Current soil life expectancy of A horizon (SLEA), which is the time until a critical horizon thickness needed for sustaining crop production is reached, was calculated for each scenario. Erosion hazard degrees were determined with SLEA. Croplands with SLEA of <0 a, 0 a~20 a, 20 a~100 a, 100 a~1000 a and ≥1000 a, were classified as “Damaged”, “High hazard”, “Moderate hazard”, “Low hazard” and “No hazard”, respectively. Current area ratio of “Damaged” and “High hazard” and “Moderate hazard” was found to be 8%, 5%, and 22%, respectively. The optimum conservation practice was found to be No-till for “Damaged”, “Combo 2” for “High hazard”, “Moderate hazard” and “Low hazard” and Present for “No hazard”. An optimum conservation schedule was also suggested for each township to maintain all soils to have an A horizon above 20 cm.

Forward and reverse successions of karst rocky desertification (KRD) occur simultaneously, and are linked to human activity, thus presenting a mutual feedback loop. Previous studies have focused on the unilateral human-driven mechanism of KRD or the impact of KRD on social-economic activities. These lack quantitative measurement and in-depth understanding of interactions involved. Therefore, this study builds and applies a novel model for measuring the coupling relationship and degree between KRD and social-economic activity in the Guizhou karst region of China. Results show an overall improvement but local deteriorations in KRD from 2000 to 2011; conversely, social-economic activity intensities increased during that time period. With their spatio-temporal variations, positive and negative human–desertification coupling relationships with an increased coupling degree are found. Different coupling relationship types between KRD and social-economic development, including urbanization, economic development and household income, are shown. KRD is found to be high positively coupled with specific human behavior intensities such as population movement, steep slope cultivation and ecological restoration. An inverted U-shaped curve is observed in the coupling index of KRD and urbanization within different development levels. Negative coupling at a low urbanization level indicates the limitation of the karst physical environment on social-economic development. Positive coupling with increasing urbanization implies a conflict between environment protection and social-economic development. A return to negative coupling in several counties with high urbanization levels indicates a win-win for ecology and economy. The effectiveness of the proposed coupling model is demonstrated, informing differentiated strategies for combating KRD and improving social-economic development.

The complexity and uncertainty of land use and environmental factors pose challenges to the management decisions of ecological restoration and conservation.We integrated the mixed-cell CA model and Bayesian belief networks to develop an innovative method for optimizing ecosystem services under different land development scenarios, including consideration of the uncertainty and variability of factors.The southern region of Sichuan Province, China, was selected as an example.We first established three development scenarios between 2015 and 2035, namely, natural development scenario (NDS), ecological protection scenario (EPS), and cultivated land protection scenario (CLPS).The MCCA model was utilized to simulate the land use pattern in 2035 under different scenarios.We then construced a BBN-based model to investigate the carbon sequestration, grain supply, soil conservation, habitat quality, and water yield in 2035 under uncertain scenarios.After the sensitivity analysis and evaluation of the model, we determined the state combination of influential factors at various ecosystem service levels and the ecological restoration and conservation key areas.The obtained result showed that the key influencing factors impacting the ecosystem services level included NPP, Slope, forestland and ET, and the state combination corresponding to the highest level of ecosystem services was predominantly distributed in regions with the highest NPP, the highest Slope, the highest forestland area and low ET.Based on this finding, we proposed some suggestions for ecological restoration and conservation of key areas.This model considers uncertainties and is capable of providing scientific recommendations on restoration and conservation; therefore, it can serve as an effective tool to assist stakeholders in making decisions.

The worldwide diversity of contaminated sites, coupled with a scarcity of available land in urban spatial planning, has led to an increasing political significance for brownfield conservation and re-use to achieve land resource sustainability. In this study, economic or so-called rebound effects of land regeneration, are studied via a global meta-analysis on value fluctuation of surrounding property. To this end, a total of 91 observations from 28 HPM (Hedonic Pricing Model) studies were synthesized to conduct a meta-analysis following a conditional random-effects procedure. The empirical results indicate that, in line with expectations, the conservation and recycling of land resource indeed generate significant rebound in the implicit price of residential houses, especially for those located within 2 kilometers of contaminated sites. Before land remediation and re-use, dwellings closest in distance to contaminated sites experience the greatest value loss. On average, the depreciation in property values within the first 1km distance from a contaminated site is about 8.18%, significantly at the 1% level, while the corresponding adverse impact from 1 to 2 km distance is a 4.8% price premium significantly at the 5% level. The significance of the stigma or rebound effects depend on 12 attributes, in which, house age, location, FAR (Floor Area Ratio) and CBD (Central Business District) variables have the largest impact, of -37.38%~37.5%. From a practical perspective, the findings of this meta-analysis: 1) help refine contributing parameters in HPM studies to evaluate environmental economics; and 2) provide meaningful decision-making support for cost-effective remediation and benefit maximization.

The problem of farmland degradation and air pollution caused by wind erosion and particulate matter emissions is serious. Relying on biological soil crust coverage can effectively inhibit the production of wind erosion materials. However, recent studies have discussed the wind erosion and particulate matter emission processes separately and few studies analyzed both, clarifying the changes in the proportion of particulate matter emissions in the total wind erosion. Aiming at the typical farming-pastoral transition zone in the monsoon climate zone, this study used wind tunnels to analyze the wind erosion and particulate matter emissions of algae crusts and moss crusts for different wind speeds and coverage conditions. Results show that the effects of wind speed and coverage on the total wind erosion of biological soil crusts are similar. However, the emission of particulate matter is particularly sensitive to coverage of biological soil crusts. The proportion of particulate matter emissions in wind erosion decreases with increasing wind speed. According to the trend of the proportion with wind speed, the particle emission capacity of moss crust is directly proportional to the particle size and inversely proportional to the coverage. In contrast, the particle emission capacity of algae crust particles is proportional to the particle size, but the relationship with coverage is not regular. The results of this study can improve the knowledge of the relationship between wind erosion and particulate matter emissions and give relevant information for the management of wind erosion and particulate matter emissions.

The combination of plastic film mulching and subsurface organic amendment is a novel strategy for saline soil amelioration and utilization in China. However, how the strategy affect soil organic carbon (SOC) contents directly and indirectly (physical protection and microbiological regulation) were still not-documented. Therefore, four treatments, i.e., no amendment with and without plastic film mulching, subsurface (10-30 cm soil depth) organic amendment with and without plastic film mulching, were arranged and sampled after three-year filed experiment. Compared with no amendment with and without plastic film mulching, subsurface organic amendment increased the SOC content in the 0-40 cm soil depth by 70% and 90%, respectively. Plastic film mulching decreased SOC by 16% without organic amendment. Subsurface organic amendment transformed the dominant aggregation particles from <0.053 mm to 0.25-2 mm, indicating that both direct carbon input and indirect physical protection contributed to SOC increment. Conversely, SOC decreased with plastic film mulching due to the 14% lower fungal diversity compared with soil without plastic film mulching, was supported by the positive path coefficient from fungal diversity to SOC. Therefore, the combination of plastic film mulching and subsurface organic amendment increased SOC by 61% by direct carbon input and indirect physical protection and microbial regulation. In conclusion, subsurface organic amendment with plastic film mulching reinforced soil organic carbon increment through altering saline soil aggregate structure and regulating fungal community, and confirmed it is a feasible way to increase SOC for saline soil amelioration.

A four-year field experiment was carried out to evaluate an integrated use of saline water for the saline soil reclamation in Hebei Province of North China. A landscape shrub (Caryopteris × clandonensis ‘Worcester Gold’) was cultivated using drip irrigation scheduled by rootzone soil matric potential control at five levels of water salinity (ECi): 0.8, 3.1, 4.7, 6.3, and 7.8 dS·m−1. Soil matric potential control was applied using a threshold of −5, −10, −15, and −20 kPa in the first, second, third, and fourth year, respectively. After four growing seasons, the saline soil (initial ECe value of 27.8 dS·m−1) was reclaimed to slightly saline soil for 0–1 m depth (4.1–7.2 dS·m−1) under drip irrigation with saline water of ECi < 7.8 dS·m−1. The salt leaching efficiency of root zone soil was highest in the first year and lowered year-by-year. The plants strongly responded to the different soil water and salinity regime. Significant decreases in survival rate, plant growth, and shoot dry weight in response to increasing ECi were found. To achieve a relative survival rate of >50%, the threshold salinity of irrigation water for ‘Worcester Gold’ cultivation was 7.8, 7.0, 5.6, and 5.3 dS·m–1, for the first, second, third, and fourth growing season, respectively. It is recommended to use an inter-seasonal evolving matric potential threshold of −10 kPa for dry season of the third year, −15 kPa for rainy season of the third year and dry season of the fourth year, and −20 kPa for rainy season of the fourth year.
